MHJA CLASS SPECIFICATIONS
All Hunter Jumper Courses must comply with Rule XXIV,
Chapter III and Rule XXVII, Chapter V of the USAE Rule Book
HUNTER DIVISION
SHORT STIRRUP HUNTER - Open to horses and ponies ridden by
riders twelve (12) years and under and who have not jumped 2'3"
at a horse show recognized by the USAE. At a show where a rider competes
in the Short Stirrup Division, he/she may cross enter only into the
Novice Rider Section and any schooling or warm-up class where the
fence heights do not exceed 2'3". Fences 18" to 2'. Short
stirrup riders may enter their age group equitation.
SMALL PONY HUNTER - Open to ponies 12.2 hands and
under, ridden by a junior rider who is not older than 12 years. Fences
2'3".
MEDIUM PONY HUNTER - Open to ponies over 12.2 hands
and not exceeding 13.2 hands, ridden by a junior rider who is not
older than 14 years. Fences 2'6".
LARGE PONY HUNTER - Open to ponies 13.2 hands to
14.2 hands, ridden by a junior rider. Age limitations for riders shall
comply with current USAE rules. Fences 3”.
CHILDREN’S HUNTER PONY – Open to ponies
14.2 hands and under, ridden by a junior rider. Pony/rider combination
may not compete in any USAE rated class at the same show. Fences 2’3”
for small and medium ponies, 2’6” for large ponies. (See
Zone IV Specifications).
MODIFIED CHILDREN/ADULT HUNTER - Open to any junior
or amateur rider on a horse or pony. Fences 2'6" - 2'9".
A rider may not compete in any class where the fences exceed 3’
at a horse show where he is competing in Modified Child/Adult Hunter.
PRE-GREEN HUNTER - Open to horses and ponies in their
first or second year of showing who have never shown over fences 3'6"
or higher. Horses in their first year of Pre-Green will jump 3'; horses
in their second year of Pre-Green will jump 3'3".
CHILDREN'S HUNTER - Open to horses and ponies ridden
by a junior rider. Riders and horses are eligible for any equitation.
The horse/rider combination is not eligible for USAE rated classes
other than under saddle classes. (See Zone IV Specifications). Fences
3'.
ADULT AMATEUR HUNTER - Open to horses and ponies
ridden by an amateur rider. Riders and horses are eligible for any
equitation classes. The horse/rider combination is not eligible for
any other USAE rated classes (See Zone IV Specifications). Fences
3'.
AMATEUR OWNER HUNTER - Open to horses and ponies
ridden by an amateur owner or an amateur member of the owner's family
who is no longer eligible to compete as a junior exhibitor. Leased
horses are not eligible and multiple ownership is not permitted unless
all owners are members of the same family. An amateur who rides for
a person outside of his family may not ride in a class restricted
to amateur owners in the same show. Amateur owners may, however, ride
for other exhibitors in the under saddle classes of the green and
regular sections, and for other amateur owners who have more than
one entry in under saddle classes. Fences 3'6".
JUNIOR HUNTER - Open to horses ridden by a junior
rider. Fences 3'6".
GREEN HUNTER - Open to horses in their first or second
year of showing over fences 3'6" or higher. Fences 3'6"
for first year horses, 3'9" for second year horses.
JUMPER DIVISION
HOPEFUL JUMPER – Open to any
horse or pony who does not jump higher than 3’6” at this
horse show. Fences 2’6”.
LOW SCHOOLING JUMPER - Open to any horse or pony
who does not jump higher than 3'6" at this horse show. Riders
are not restricted in cross-entering. Level I.
CHILDREN'S/ADULT JUMPER - Open to horses and ponies.
Horse/rider combination may not enter any other USAE rated division,
excluding Equitation. (See Zone IV Specifications).
Level II–III.
HIGH SCHOOLING JUMPER - Open to any horse or pony
and rider. Level II-III.
MODIFIED JUMPER - Open to any horse or pony and rider.
To be conducted and scored under USAE Tables and class conditions
pertaining to Preliminary Jumper. Level IV-V.
JUNIOR/AMATEUR OWNER JUMPER - Open to horses ridden
by a junior or amateur owner rider or an amateur member of the owner's
family. Leased horses are not eligible and multiple ownership is not
permitted unless all owners are members of the same family. Level
VI-VII.
EQUITATION DIVISION
SHORT STIRRUP EQUITATION - Open to riders twelve (12) years
of age and under. At a show where a rider has ridden in the Short
Stirrup Division, he/she may cross enter only in the Novice Rider
Section, equitation classes, and any schooling or warm-up class where
the fence height does not exceed 2'.

SS EQ OVER FENCES - Fences 18" - 2'.
EQUITATION 11 AND UNDER ON THE FLAT - Tests 1-8.
EQUITATION 11 AND UNDER OVER FENCES - Tests 1-8, Fences 2'6".
EQUITATION 12-14 ON THE FLAT - Tests 1-13.
EQUITATION 12-14 OVER FENCES - Tests 1-13, Fences 3'.
EQUITATION 15-17 ON THE FLAT - Tests 1-19.
EQUITATION 15-17 OVER FENCES - Tests 1-19, Fences 3'3".
ADULT AMATEUR EQUITATION ON THE FLAT - Tests 1-19.
ADULT AMATEUR EQUITATION OVER FENCES - Tests 1-19, Fences 3'.
ANNUAL RECOGNITION
BEGINNER RIDER may be offered as a section at Barn
Shows. Fences will be x-rails not to exceed 18" in height. Participants
in Beginner Rider will receive a special participation ribbon at the
Annual Banquet.
NOVICE RIDER - Open to riders who have not won three
(3) blue ribbons over fences and have not jumped over 2'3" at
a horse show recognized by the USAE. Ribbons in Short Stirrup will
be counted. Riders achieving their third blue ribbon during the show
year may complete the year in that division. Riders leaving the Novice
Rider Division will be recognized at the annual banquet. Points do
not count toward high point rider awards. Fences 2'.
LIMIT RIDER - Open to riders who have not won six
(6) blue ribbons over fences at a recognized USAE show. Ribbons won
in Short Stirrup will not count; ribbons won in equitation classes
will count. Riders achieving their sixth blue ribbon during the show
year may complete the year in this division. Riders leaving the Limit
Rider Division will be recognized with a special award at the annual
banquet. Points do not count toward high point rider awards. Fences
2’6” – 2’9”.
LIMIT HUNTER - Open to horses and ponies that have
not won six (6) blue ribbons over fences at a recognized USAE horse
show. Horses achieving their sixth blue ribbon during the show year
may continue to complete the year in this division. Horses leaving
the Limit Hunter Division will be recognized with a special award
at the annual banquet. Points do not count toward high point rider
awards. Fences 2'6" - 2'9".
